Florida already has law requiring proven insurance to get license tags. Doesn’t work. We also have a distressing large number of people driving who do not have a license at all. So many, that the courts can’t or won’t jail them when they’re caught.
You already pay for the other driver’s lack of insurance, that’s what UU [Uninsured/underinsured] coverage is.
Yes, you may decline to buy UU coverage. Under present system, if you do and are hit by an uninsured driver who flees or is poor — you pay for your own hospital bills. So you are running the risk of getting hit and having no one you can sue [or collect from] and thus have all your family’s assets go to the hospitals and doctors. How fair is that?
